The Broadway musical adaptation of Rocky will “eat lightning” beginning February 11 at the Winter Garden Theatre. Featuring an original score by Tony-winning songwriting team Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the previously announced musical includes a book by Tony winner Thomas Meehan and Sylvester Stallone, who garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for the 1976 film Rocky. Directed by Alex Timbers, the musical is scheduled to open on March 13. Casting will be announced shortly.
Rocky tells the story of a struggling small-time Philadelphia boxer, Rocky Balboa, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to go the distance against heavyweight champ Apollo Creed. The musical originally premiered in Hamburg, Germany, in fall 2012, starring Drew Sarich in the title role. In addition to Stallone as Rocky Balboa, the 1976 film starred Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Paulie Pennino and Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed.
The Rocky creative team includes choreographer Kelly Devine and fight choreographer Steven Hoggett.
